Jeong In-gyu (33-Ulsan Hyundai) has left a message for South Korea national soccer team coach Jürgen Klinsmann.
Lee In-gyu started against Daejeon Hana in the 15th round home match of the Hana One Q K League 1 2023 at Munsu Stadium in Ulsan at 7 p.m. 메이저놀이터 on Aug. 28 and scored two goals in the second half. Ulsan drew 3-3 with Daejeon to move into sole possession of first place with 38 points.
Ulsan went down 1-3 after conceding three goals in the first half. One from Leandro and two from Masa. Lee In-gyu was bleeding after being hit in the face by Daejeon defender Kim Hyun-woo’s shoulder during a contested aerial ball in the first half. Despite first aid treatment, the bleeding did not stop.
Inhabigyu became sharper after the 21st minute of the second half when Martin Adam came on as a substitute. In the 32nd minute, he received a left-footed cross from Rubik’s Cube and scored a header to make it 2-3. Ten minutes later, he tied the game at 3-3 with a left-footed shot after receiving a pass from Martin Adam.
With his seventh and eighth goals of the day, Lee In-jong-kyu joined Na Sang-ho (FC Seoul) as the top scorer of the tournament. Rubikson and Lars (Suwon FC) followed with six goals. Bako (Ulsan), Edgar, Ko Jae-hyun (Daegu), and Ko Young-joon (Pohang) are next on the list with five goals.
In a post-match interview, Lee In-gyu said, “We could have easily gone ahead if we had scored when we had the chance. It’s a game to reflect on. Especially in the first half, it was a game that could have been easily resolved if we had capitalized on our goal chances.” He reflected on that part.
“In attack, I struggled to hold my own. When Martin Adam came on, it took the focus off me. I was able to control the game easily. Coach Hong Myung-bo’s tactics in the second half worked.”
As the top scorer, In-Ju-gyu could be in line for a call-up to the national team for a friendly A match in late June. When asked by commentator Lee Sang-yoon to appeal to Klinsmann, In-joo said, “I’ll do my best to show good form in the remaining games. Please take a look at the Ulsan players and myself.”
Ulsan’s next opponent is Jeonbuk Hyundai. The second ‘Hyundai Derby’ of the season will be held at Jeonju World Cup Stadium on March 3 at 4pm. The first meeting in Ulsan resulted in a 2-1 victory for Ulsan. “Today’s game was more important because it was before the game against Jeonbuk. The Hyundai Derby is a rivalry match. We all know how to prepare without having to talk to each other. We will prepare well.”
Finally, on the strength of rallying from 1-3 to 3-3, he said, “If it wasn’t for the support of the fans, I would have given up. I heard them shouting, ‘Stay strong,’ and I was able to follow them to the end. I’m so grateful.”
