“It wasn’t an easy opponent, but I’m happy with how the match went overall,” said Lim Jong-hoon, while Shin Yoo-bin added, “We played well today and prepared well because the remaining matches are important.”

Their quarterfinal opponents are Japanese powerhouse Tomokazu Harimoto and Hina Hayata, who are ranked second in the world in mixed doubles. Harimoto is a super ace who is considered Japan’s table tennis prodigy, while Hayata is one of the “two horsemen” of Japanese women’s table tennis alongside Mima Ito.

This will be the first challenge for Shin Yubin and Lim Jong-hoon, who are going for the mixed doubles gold medal at the Games. “They’re very good players, but we’ve never been beaten in mixed doubles or singles,” said Lim Jong-hoon, adding, “They’re strong opponents, but they’re not unbeatable.” “They are very good players, but if we prepare well, I think we can achieve a good result,” said Shin Yubin.

A win in the quarterfinals would secure at least a bronze medal. The World Championships awards a bronze medal even if you lose in the semifinals. Shin, who withdrew from the last World Championships due to injury, could win her first World Championships medal if she reaches the quarterfinals. “A medal is what I’ve always wanted, so I’ll have to work harder to achieve it,” said Shin.
